Why loving what you do is important

Do you dread going to work each day? Maybe you’re just feeling unsatisfied with your current job situation because you’re not seeing the results? Finding joy in your daily job can make all the difference in how successful, fulfilled and happy you are. It may be hard to believe but loving what you do for a living can have amazing benefits both professionally and personally, ultimately leading to greater satisfaction with life. Read on to gain insight into why it's important to love your job and how taking steps towards this goal helps create lasting happiness.

Having a positive mindset and finding joy in the things we do can have an immense impact on our mental health. Loving what we do helps us to focus on reaching our goals, which encourages success and satisfaction with ourselves. It bolsters relationships by making us more content and confident, while also improving our self-esteem. Cultivating a sense of purpose has long been known as one of the keys to happiness and good health, both physically and emotionally. Although it is not always easy to change our mindset around work or hobbies, doing so can help to cultivate feelings of wellbeing that positively influence every aspect of our lives.

Caring deeply about your occupation or hobby can bring you tremendous physiological benefits. Studies have found that people who love what they do experience a decrease in stress and chronic illness, which can improve overall health and wellbeing. Working at something you find meaningful helps many people overcome their physical ailments; it provides a sense of purpose which can propel them out of despair and into better habits. Furthermore, when we take time for the things we enjoy, be those related to our jobs or simply our favourite hobbies, it helps us to relax and feel calmer. Loving what we do – whether it´s working on a chain reaction of complex duties in a professional context or tinkering with models on the weekend – allows us to manifest a sense of satisfaction while improving our health.

Having a job you love can also open up new opportunities for growth both personally and professionally. When someone loves their job they tend to take more risks or explore new ideas they may not have done otherwise; this innovation allows them to think outside the box while still staying within the realm of possibility making them more successful long-term.

If you are not feeling fulfilled in your work, there are a number of steps you can take immediately to start taking some action.

1.      Identify the root cause: What specifically is causing you to feel unfulfilled in your job? Is it the type of work you're doing, the work environment, or something else? Understanding the root cause can help you to figure out what changes you need to make.

2.     Consider your values: Think about your personal values and what's important to you in your career. Does your current job align with your values? If not, consider what type of work or industry would be a better fit.

3.     Explore your options: Consider what other types of jobs or industries would be a better fit for you. Research job opportunities and talk to people in those fields to get a better sense of what the work is like.

4.     Talk to your manager: If you like your company and job but not the specific tasks, try talking to your supervisor to see if there are other tasks or projects you could take on that align better with your interests and strengths.

5.     Develop your skills: Consider identifying some new skills you’d like to learn. How can you develop these within your role? Can you get involved in a side project, or spend some time in a different area of the organisation. Take a short course on LinkedIN.

6.     Consider a career change: If you're not finding fulfillment in your current job or industry, it may be time to consider a career change. This can be a big decision, but it may be necessary for you to find the fulfillment you're seeking.

Remember that it’s okay to take your time in assessing your situation and that finding that right career path or job can be a process. Don’t hesitate to seek guidance from friends, family or within your workplace.
